1. BIBLIOGRAPHY
Carle, Eric. 2007. ARTIST TO ARTIST. New York: Philomel Books.
ISBN 9780399246005
2. PLOT SUMMARY
This book is a wonderful collection of messages from artists to artists. All of these artists have work exhibited in the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Among the contributors are well know picture book artists such as Quentin Blake, Steven Kellogg, Rosemary Wells, and Chris Van Allsburg. The artists tell about their early interest in drawing, how they got started with illustrating children’s literature, and how their passion brings them great joy and satisfaction. Each artist includes a creative self-portrait, and inside a foldout page, a variety of sketches and photographs of their early doodles, sketches and studio scenes.
3. CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Each message is signed by the artist like a letter. Just as the artists have different artistic styles, their writing style is also uniquely their own as well. They write conversationally, speaking to an audience of young artists. They are encouraging and honest and even funny.
The included photographs give the reader a window into the life of the artist. The drawings and sketches are often recognizable from a favorite book. This is a great book for young artists who want to draw, but may not know where it will lead them.
4. REVIEW EXCERPT(S)
